Canada Votes 2025: MNL President

Carney was in Nova Scotia, Poilievere, and Singh were in the Greater Toronto Area yesterday, but today is the third full day of the 25th General Election Schedule for April 28th, 2025.

From coast to coast to coast, we’ll be diving into the key issues during this campaign that matter most at the local level of government.

This is Municipal Affairs: Canada Votes 2025, were here to find out what Municipalities want from Party Leaders, Local Candidates and the next Federal Government.

From housing to infrastructure, From bail reform to resource development, and agriculture to social services. Municipalities across Canada are tackling a wide range of challenges.

But they can’t do it alone.

They need a strong and reliable partner at the federal level to help build stronger, more resilient communities.

Today we are heading to the east coast, Newfoundland and Labrador where at the time of dissolution, 6 seats in province were held by the Liberal Party of Canada, while only one was held by the Conservative Party of Canada.

Over the last 3 elections the Liberals have dominated the province winning 6 of the 7 seats in 2021, and 2019, and winning all 7 seats in 2015.

You actually have to go back to the 1984 Federal election when Brian Mulroney won a majority of seats in the province. Since then the Liberals have won a majority of the seats.

To form the next government, the Conservatives will needs to smash the Red Wall that has been standing for sometime in the province.

Today, we’re looking at the wants and needs of Newfoundland and Labrador Municipalities.

What do they want to hear from party leaders and local candidates? What priorities are top of mind as they look to the next federal government?

We are honoured to be joined by Amy Coady, President of the Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador (MNL). Coady is one of the longest serving Municipal Association President in Canada, and with that brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to advocate for municipalities of all sizes and locations across the Newfoundland and Labrador

She will share her perspective on what Newfoundland and Labrador municipalities need from federal leaders and what MNL is hoping to see as Canada inches closer to April 28th, and how this federal election could impact vote apathy in the province as municipalities and the province head to the polls later this year.

So, without further ado, let’s go!
