Chestermere Votes: Dean Tops Challengers to become new Mayor

Shannon Dean, the former first-term Councillor who resigned his seat earlier this year to run for Mayor has emerged victorious in Monday night's by-election, defeating former mayors Marshall Chalmers and Jeff Colvin and one other challenger.

Dean garnered 3,559 votes, representing 56% of the total.

Dean’s win comes amid a period of significant upheaval in Chestermere's municipal government. Alongside Ritesh Narayan and Sandy Johal-Watt, Dean was one of the few councillors spared from dismissal by Municipal Affairs Minister Ric McIver.

Johal-Watt resigned after the province stepped in while Dean stepped down to run for the position of Mayor of the City. Leaving Narayan the only councillor to remain in office since the last 2021 election.

Mel Foat, Blaine Funk, and Stephen Hanley, who were dismissed by Municipal Affairs in December alongside former Mayor Jeff Colvin, all failed to reclaim their seats in Monday night's by-election. Joining Councillor Shannon Dean on the new council are Rob Wawrzynowski, Janelle Sandboe, Robert Schindler, Murray Grant, and Kiran Randhawa.

Dean and the newly elected councillors will serve until the next municipal elections in October 2025.
