FCM Rural Chair Goes To Washington

Welcome to Municipal Affairs.

Today, we’re tackling a critical issue that could seriously affect local economies from coast to coast to coast.

Trade tensions between Canada and the United States are once again making headlines, as U.S. President Donald Trump signals potential tariffs on Canadian goods in March. And while trade is often seen in the jurisdiction of federal and provincial governments, municipalities are stepping up to defend jobs, industries, and communities across Canada.

From auto manufacturing in Ontario to agriculture in the Prairies, these economic ties run deep—and local leaders know firsthand what’s at stake.

That’s why the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) headed to Washington DC this week. They’re working with federal and provincial partners but also reaching across the border—engaging U.S. counterparts like the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the National League of Cities. The goal? To reinforce just how interconnected Canada's and America's economies are.

FCM representatives joined Ontario Premier Doug Ford and the Council of the Federation in Washington, D.C., on February 11th and 12th. Among them was Neal Comeau, Councillor for Sturgeon County, Alberta, and Chair of FCM’s Rural Caucus. He brought a rural perspective to the table, ensuring that the voices of Canada’s farmers, producers, and small-town economies were heard by U.S. policymakers.

So what came out of those meetings? What’s the path forward for Canadian municipalities in this ever-changing trade landscape? And how does a rural voice fit into these high-level discussions?

We’ll unpack all of that with Councillor Neal Comeau himself, right after this.
