Gillingham Pitches US Mayors

Welcome to Municipal Affairs.
In this episode of the show we’re talking about international collaboration, trade, and what it all means for municipalities.
Last month, Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham traveled to Phoenix, Arizona, to attend the 2025 U.S. Mayors Conference. But he wasn’t just there as the mayor of Winnipeg—he was also representing Canada in his role as Vice President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Big City Mayors Caucus.
While in Phoenix, Mayor Gillingham met with 50 U.S. mayors to discuss the impact of tariffs and trade barriers on local economies. In a post on social media, he shared that with the help of the FCM, they highlighted just how much Canadian trade and investment means to cities across the U.S. The conversations focused on keeping borders open, ensuring trade remains strong, and finding ways for cities on both sides of the border to work together.
On today’s show, we’ll speak with Mayor Gillingham about what he heard during his travels and his discussions with key figures, including Democratic Mayor Andrew Ginther of Columbus, Ohio—the chair of the U.S. Mayors Conference—and Republican Mayor David Holt of Oklahoma City, the current Vice President who will soon take over as President in June.
And of course, we’ll break down what happens now that new tariffs have been put in place. What does it mean for Canadian municipalities? How will U.S. cities feel the impact? And where do local governments go from here?
That’s all ahead on Municipal Affairs.
