Municipal Affairs Goes International: United Kingdom
Welcome to Municipal Affairs: International.
Every December, we take a deep dive into the intricacies of local governance systems from around the globe.
Last year, we explored Australia’s unique approach to local government, and as we near the end of 2024, we’re heading across the pond to examine the State of Local Government in the United Kingdom.
Joining us today for this deep-dive is from our Sister show - The Political Trenches: Local Government At Work Co-Host Ian McCormack.
The UK’s system of local governance is steeped in history yet continues to evolve in response to modern challenges. In this episode, we’ll explore how it functions today, comparing it to Canada’s approach to local government. What similarities and differences exist between these two nations’ systems? How do they each address the complexities of providing services, engaging citizens, and adapting to change?
To help us unpack these questions, we’re thrilled to welcome Colin Copus as our guest.
Colin is a Professor of Local Politics at De Montfort University and the Director of the Local Governance Research Unit. With an extensive career that includes academic roles at Birmingham University’s Institute of Local Government Studies, work as a local government officer, and policy research in the UK’s House of Commons, Colin brings a wealth of expertise to the table. Not only that, but his firsthand experience as a councillor across various levels of government—from parish to county councils—makes him uniquely qualified to shed light on the state of local government in the UK today.
