PEI Municipalities Welcome New Minister Following Cabinet Shuffle
Municipal leaders across Prince Edward Island will be dealing with a new face following this morning’s cabinet shuffle. The Honourable Steven Myers has been appointed as the new Minister of Housing, Land and Communities, a position that will see him working closely with municipalities throughout the Island.
The Federation of Prince Edward Island Municipalities (FPEIM) responded promptly to the announcement, issuing a statement on social media congratulating Minister Myers. "We look forward to working together to promote viable municipalities and sustainable communities," the organization said, indicating their optimism about future collaboration under Myers’ leadership.
Steven Myers is no stranger to public service, having first been elected in 2011 and subsequently re-elected in 2015, 2019, and 2023. He brings considerable experience to the role, having served in multiple cabinet positions throughout his political career. Most recently, Myers was the Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Action, where he was a key player in the province’s climate initiatives. He has also held the portfolios of Transportation, Infrastructure, and Energy, and previously served as Leader of the Opposition, Opposition House Leader, and critic in areas such as Education, Economic Development, and Rural Development.
In his new role, Myers will be tasked with addressing pressing issues such as affordable housing, land use planning, and municipal governance—topics that remain front of mind for Island communities.
The cabinet shuffle also marks a new chapter for Rob Lantz, the former Minister of Housing, Land and Communities, who will now oversee the Education and Early Years portfolio. Both ministers face crucial tasks ahead, with the province’s housing crisis and educational reforms remaining at the forefront of public discourse.
The cabinet shuffle came after it was announced this past week that Natalie Jameson, Minister of Education was stepping back from the cabinet to run for the Conservative Party of Canada nomination in Charlottetown.
