Serving Up Some Pie in Clearwater County
If you’ve travelled between Jasper and Banff over the past few decades and camped along Highway 11, just off Highway 93, you’ve likely passed through Clearwater County without even realizing it.
Nestled between two of Canada’s most famous national parks, Clearwater County is a vast region filled with some of Alberta’s most iconic tourism scenes, rivalling the beauty found within the parks themselves.
For months, I’d been meaning to visit Clearwater County. When I began my Cross Border Travels this summer, I knew this hidden gem would be one of my first stops. My trip included a much-anticipated reconnection with Clearwater County Reeve Michelle Swanson, eager to show me some of the area's best-kept secrets.
Our first stop was the newly opened Taunton Bridge, located in the western part of the county. As a - not so - enthusiastic hiker, I was 'thrilled' to embark on the hike from the parking area to the Taunton Trestle Bridge. Wildlife sightings, the soothing sound of flowing water, and the crisp, fresh air make the hike an adventure in itself.
However, the real magic begins as you approach the historic rail bridge. The moment you see the Taunton Trestle Bridge, you know you’re in for something special. If the hike didn’t already take your breath away, the view from the top of the bridge certainly will. The vast landscape stretches out for miles, leaving no doubt about the majesty of our country.
After we visited Taunton Bridge, we headed to the historic hamlet of Nordegg, Alberta.
Though it may not be widely known, I highly recommend taking a day trip to this historic community if you’re in Alberta. Nordegg is one of the first self-sufficient communities in the province. In 1906, German immigrant Martin Nordegg arrived in Canada, and by 1914, the town of Nordegg was established, driven by a booming coal mining industry.
The community thrived as coal and lumber industries became its economic backbone. Despite its prosperity, Nordegg’s history is marked by moments of hardship. In 1915, Martin Nordegg was forced to leave the country during the Great War but returned in 1923 after becoming a British subject. Twelve years later, Nordegg welcomed Tim Buck, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Canada.
One of the most tragic events in Nordegg’s history occurred on October 31, 1941, when 29 miners were killed in a mining accident at the Brazeau Collieries due to a buildup of gas. The tombstones of these miners remain, and a monument erected by the United Mine Workers of America stands tall in the community as a sombre reminder of the past.
No visit to Nordegg would be complete without stopping by the Miners Café. As soon as you walk in, the delightful aroma of pies and coffee welcomes you, offering a true small-town experience. I highly recommend trying the Chocolate Pecan Pie it is delicious, and you’ll find yourself savouring every bite.
Clearwater County is more than just Nordegg. It’s a paradise for campers, outdoor enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a respite from the hustle and bustle of city life. As you drive along Highway 11, you’ll encounter clear waters—yes, the pun is intended—and breathtaking mountain landscapes that are simply awe-inspiring. Venturing off the beaten path reveals new tourism spots, scenic swimming holes, and friendly greetings from fellow hikers.
One of the county’s hidden treasures is the abundance of recreational activities available. Whether you’re into hiking, fishing, or simply enjoying a leisurely picnic, Clearwater County offers something for everyone. The region’s natural beauty provides the perfect backdrop for outdoor adventures, and the opportunities to explore are endless.
For those who love camping, Clearwater County offers numerous campgrounds that cater to all types of campers. From rustic tent sites to fully serviced RV spots, you’ll find the perfect place to set up camp and immerse yourself in nature. The night skies here are especially stunning, offering a clear view of the stars that’s hard to find in more populated areas.
Clearwater County’s charm lies not only in its natural beauty but also in its forward-thinking community. The county’s growth and the council’s vision for the future are set to put it on the map. With high-speed fibre optic internet coming to all parts of the community, Clearwater County is on the brink of becoming a modern, connected destination while maintaining its serene, rustic appeal.
Clearwater County is a hidden gem that everyone should experience at least once. Its rich history, stunning landscapes, and welcoming community make it a unique destination that stands out even among Alberta’s many beautiful regions. Whether you’re hiking to the Taunton Trestle Bridge, exploring the historic town of Nordegg, or simply enjoying a slice of pie at the Miners Café, you’ll find that Clearwater County has something special to offer.
