In a significant cabinet shuffle marking almost one year into the NDP government’s term, Premier Wab Kinew announced Wednesday Morning that Glen Simard, MLA for Brandon East, will be stepping into the role of Minister of Municipal and Northern Relations, replacing new Minister of natural resources Ian Bushie.

The announcement according to Kinew highlights the government’s renewed focus on refreshing its leadership team and realigning departments to better serve Manitobans.

Simard, who is also taking on responsibilities for Francophone Affairs and the Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation, brings a strong background in local issues and public service to the role.

His appointment is timely, aligning with the upcoming Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM) convention in Winnipeg, where he is expected to take an active role in engaging with municipalities and discussing regional priorities.

Premier Kinew emphasized the government’s commitment to its core priorities, particularly addressing healthcare challenges, tackling the rising cost of living, and promoting unity across the province. “Hope lives here in Manitoba,” Kinew stated.

The cabinet restructuring also includes the launch of a new Department of Innovation and New Technology, led by Mike Moroz, MLA for River Heights. This department aims to position Manitoba at the forefront of technological advancement, nurturing the tech industry, supporting local businesses, and modernizing government services. “The Department of Innovation and New Technology will help Manitoba’s tech sector thrive and improve public service delivery,” Kinew added.

Two New Faces, Brings Cabinet to 18

Two new MLAs are joining Kinew’s cabinet for the first time, marking significant additions to Manitoba’s leadership.

Mintu Sandhu, MLA for The Maples, has been appointed as Minister of Public Service Delivery, a new portfolio focused on improving government service accessibility and efficiency for Manitobans.

Meanwhile, Nellie Kennedy, MLA for Assiniboia, will take on the role of Minister of Sport, Culture, Heritage, and Tourism. Kennedy’s mandate includes promoting Manitoba’s vibrant cultural scene, supporting tourism growth, and celebrating the province’s rich heritage. Her role highlights the government’s commitment to fostering community pride and stimulating economic growth through tourism and cultural engagement.

Manitoba Municipalities React

The AMM responded to Simard’s appointment with a social media post expressing appreciation for outgoing minister Ian Bushie, while welcoming Simard to the new role. “On behalf of the AMM, we extend our thanks to the Hon. Ian Bushie for his collaborative work with our organization over the past year and wish him success in his new portfolio. We also congratulate the Hon. Glen Simard on his appointment as the new Minister of Municipal and Northern Relations. We look forward to working with you as you settle into your new role,” the statement read.
